Ourense Hotels and Accommodation
According to legend, the town of Ourense, in Galicia in northern Spain, got its name because the ancient Romans mined gold in the nearby Valdeorras Hills. Evidence of the Roman occupation of this part of Spain can be seen in the seven-arched Puente Romano (Roman Bridge) that is still here; rebuilt on its original foundations in the 13th century. But if the Romans came for gold, they stayed for the water. To this day people come here for the water, whether for a long, therapeutic program or just for a weekend. Ourense was built around the Fonte as Burgas, famous thermal springs whose waters flow from three fountains at a temperature of 65 C (150 F). Visitors at Ourense hotels use the warm waters of the spas throughout the region for health and beauty treatments, or just for relaxation.
In the Museo Arquelogico visitors can see Roman artifacts, as well as exhibits from before and after the Roman period. The museum is just behind the Praza Maior. Visitors will also want to see the Cathedral de San Martino which was founded in the sixth century and rebuilt in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Its interesting feature is the Romanesque Paradise Door which illustrates the 24 Old Men of the Apocalypse and retains its medieval colouring. The 14th century Claustro de San Francisco is nearby.
