Pontevedra Hotels and Accommodation
This city on Spain’s north coast lies inland on a river, but in medieval times it was a thriving port. It was in the shipyards here that Christopher Columbus’ flagship the Santa Maria was built. Pontevedra has a well preserved Old Quarter with a number of interesting bars. It can get very lively on the weekend. Pontevedra also has the small but impressive Museo Provincial. Here the visitor can see Bronze Age jewelry, model ships, silver from all over the world, and a reconstruction of the captain’s cabin on a nineteenth century warship. The museum, which is in two eighteenth century mansions joined by a stone bridge, also has a priceless art collection that includes paintings by Zubaran and Goya, as well as Alfonso Castaleo, a twentieth century Galician artist. He is best known for his dramatic paintings of the Spanish Civil War.
The Gothic Ruinas de Santo Domingo on the south side of the old part of town is now a museum containing Roman artifacts and Galician coats-of-arms. Visitors will also want to see the 16th century sailors’ basilica of Santa Maria Mayor with its façade of richly carved figures of fishermen and oarsmen. Visitors staying in Pontevedra hotels on July 29 might want to visit the nearby village of As Neves where people are paraded in funeral clothes and coffins in a festival dedicated to St. Marta.
