Puerto de la Cruz was formed by volcanic activity making for a unique landscape. It has become a thriving center of tourism in north Tenerife in the Orotava Valley. There is something for everyone. Nature lovers can visit the La Orotava Botanical Garden with its exotic variety of plants including the fragrant plumerias and interesting fig palms. There is a popular complex of salt water swimming pools called Lago Martiánez which was designed by the famous architect César Manrique. At Loro Parque, or Parrot Park, you can find 200 different species of colorful parrots.
Puerto de la Cruz boasts several historical buildings that you should visit. These include the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña and the Castle of San Felipe. The beauty of the area can best be appreciated in the Teide National Park which contains regional wildlife and plants. The national park is surrounded by the Corona Forestal Nature Reserve. Puerto de la Cruz is a playground for those looking for an escape from the tedium of work. There are nightclubs, restaurants and a large sports facility. No visit is complete without tasting traditional Tenerife cuisine, including Vieja, a local species of fish. At the end of the day, take a walk on the Avenida de Colón and enjoy the view of the sea.
