The Archivo General de Indias is a general archive of ancient merchant travels and exchanges. It is located within the Casa Lonja de Mercaderes. These documents are considered some of the most valuable pieces of Spanish history, and as such, not generally open for public viewing individually. In 1987, the building and the archives were registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Visitors to the area will find excellent but cheap hotels near Archivo General de Indias that can allow you to be within a few miles of the archive.
The facility is still one of the biggest research libraries in the country and as such is open during normal business hours. Visitors can also access the more than 15 million pages of documents and archives now on digital format. On the other hand, visiting the more than 43,000 volumes of text including some 16th century pieces in person may be a better option.
