Amposta is a town of about 20,000 inhabitants, located in the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia. It stands on the shores of the Ebre River, near where that river empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The town was important during Roman times, when tax collection was centered there. It was a military outpost throughout the Middle Ages, but started to undergo a decline after its castle fell in 1465, during the Catalan Civil War. The town reinvented itself in the 19th century as a center of agriculture. To this day, rice farming dominates the town, although lately a number of furniture, food processing, and paper packaging factories and workshops have sprung up as well.
For visitors, important sights in Amposta include the beautiful yet unfinished Church of the Assumption and the Montsia Museum, with exhibits devoted to the region's flora and fauna, as well as local archeology. Before checking out of his or her hotel in Amposta, every tourist should also visit the town's so-called House of Wood, formerly a haven for hunters, now a museum of local wildlife.
