Ocaña Hotels and Accommodation
The small municipality of Ocana is in the province of Toledo in central Spain. It is about 50 kilometers from the city of Toledo. It was here on November 19, 1809, that the French army of Joseph Bonaparte (Napoleon’s brother) and Marshal Nicolas Soult defeated a Spanish army led by General Juan de Areizaga in the Battle of Ocana. People come to discount hotels in Ocana to see the town’s beautiful historic buildings. The lovely Plaza Mayor dates back to the 18th century. It has been declared a national monument. In the 15th century monastery of Santo Domingo you can see exquisitely carved choir stalls. The Fuente Grande Square dates from the 16th century. It is paved with stone and has washhouses and galleries. There are two churches that are worth a visit; the Renaissance Church of Santa Maria, and the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Visitors should also see the Isabelline Palace of the Dukes of Frias and the Convent of the Carmelitas Descalzas.
If you plan on being here over Easter, be sure to book your room in a budget hotel in Ocana in advance. Many people come here for the religious celebrations, especially on Good Friday. That is when statues of the saints are carried through the streets in a procession accompanied by ceremonial guards. There is another popular local festival from September 7th to 11th. These occasions give visitors an excellent opportunity to sample the local wine, the famous Manchego cheese and delicious game dishes.
