Silla is a community in the comarca (county) of Horta Sud, in the province of Valencia in Spain. Many of the visitors who come to discount hotels in Silla do so because of a story about a Eucharistic Miracle. In 1907 some consecrated hosts were stolen from the Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Silla. They were later found under a rock in a garden outside of town, and were returned to the church. Years passed, and the sacred hosts did not deteriorate. This was considered a miracle. The hosts can still be seen, preserved in wax, in the Church of Our Lady of the Angels.
The province of Valencia has some beautiful countryside that draws backpackers and cyclists. The Valley of the Rio Turia is a popular destination for hikers. At Chelva you can see the remains of a Roman aqueduct. In Alpuente the little town hall is in a tower above a 14th century gateway. The Gothic town of Requena is Valencia’s wine center. For a truly unique experience, go to the town of Bunol in August for the annual La Tomatina Festival, a tomato throwing free-for-all. In Sagunt there is a restored Roman hillside theater that hosts an annual summer arts festival. The most historic town is Xativa, allegedly the home of the notorious Borgia family before they went to Italy. It has a castle and a museum.
