Bilbao is the principal city in the Basque Country in the north of Spain, with 354,145 permanent residents. It is the capital of the Basque province of Biscay. Bilboa is located by the sea, and is a major port town, as well as a center of industry. The city was founded in 1300 by the Lord of Biscay, near the site of an ancient village. Recently, the city has attempted to increase its tourism, moving away from its reputation as primarily an industrial city. Many new Bilbao hotels have been erected in the last 20 years, as has a new tram line and subway system.
The most famous site of interest in Bilbao is the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, which exhibits modern art in a distinctive building designed by contemporary architect Frank Gehry. The elegant, contemporary Zubizuri bridge is another Bilbao landmark. Additionally, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is considered one of the best art museums in Spain.
