Orebro is a lan (county) at the western end of Lake Hjalmaren in central Sweden. It includes the province of Narke, half of Vastmanland, and smaller parts of Varmlamd and Vastergotland. The capital of Orebro Lan is the city of Orebro. A principal attraction here is Prebro Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. It was enlarged by King Gustaf Vasa in the 16th century. Many other buildings in the Old Town here go back to medieval times. In was here in 1810 that Napoleon’s former general, Baptiste Bernadott, was elected crown prince of Sweden. Here visitors can see the Svampen, the famed Mushroom Tower. There’s a great view from the top. In Askersund visitors can see the Landskyrkan, a 17th century church that is considered one of the finest religious buildings from Sweden’s Age of Greatness.
