Aarau is a city in the north of Switzerland. The capital of the canton of Aargau, the city's inhabitants number about 15,500. Like most of this part of Switzerland, the citizens of Aarau speak mostly German. Influenced by the regions north and east, the religion here is overwhelmingly Protestant and Lutheran. The city's importance stems from its status as a center of canton government. Even today, most of the jobs in Aarau are with the canton government offices. Aarau is notable for having more jobs available than residents, especially in the service sector. Many of its workers, consequently, commute into town from nearby suburbs.
For the tourists staying in Aarau hotels, most of the city's main attractions have to do with the historic functions as a center of government. The City Hall is one such attraction, as is the medieval Rore Tower. The Aarau art museum is considered a historic site of national significance by the Swiss government.
