Biel/Bienne is a Swiss city of 50,852 inhabitants. The city's dual name reflects its simultaneously German and French linguistic heritage. Biel/Bienne is located right on the border between French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland, and its population is largely bilingual. The city's new official name consequently incorporates both the German and the French variant of its name. Biel/Bienne stands on the shore of Lake Biel, at the entrance to a pass into the Jura mountains. This pass is one of the only ways to access the Jura region.
Most of Switzerland's world-famous watch makers are headquartered in Biel/Bienne into the present day. Other attractions are the Biel/Bienne Municipal Park, the Place du Ring, as well as the Biel town church.
