Brienz is a municipality in the district of Interlaken, in the canton of Berne in Switzerland. The village is located on the north bank of Lake Brienz, right near the foot of the Brienzer Rothom mountain. The area is heavily reliant on tourism, and it is famed for its wood carvings and the Cantonal Woodcarving School, which was opened in 1862. The first documents relating to Brienz date back to the mid 12th Century, and the village had a varied history until the 16th Century, when it became part of the canton of Berne. If you go to Brienz, you’ll notice that the sea promenade, which was built during World War One, runs the length of the village to the lake shore. This part of Brienz is noted for its exceptional beauty. You can relax in the gardens by the promenade and enjoy the flowers and other plants.
Brienz is fairly quiet, and this is reflected in its attractions. Besides the promenade there is the steam train known as the Brienz Rothom Bahn, which you can ride up to Brienzer Rothom. Don’t leave the area without taking the independent cable car up to the beautiful Giessbach waterfall, and also visit the Ballenberg Open Air Museum that contains buildings hundred years old from all over Switzerland. Although the village is not large, it does have a good number of hotels.
