Interlaken is a town of 5,700 inhabitants situated in the highlands of the Bern canton in Switzerland. It stands on the banks of the Aare River, in between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, from which location the town gets its name. In the middle ages, the town was a center for religion (due to the presence, until 1528, of an Augustinian convent nearby), textiles, and watchmaking. These days, the town is mostly a center for tourism, among the first in Switzerland. It's a great place from which to start hiking and backpacking through the surrounding mountains, whose majestic aspect can be seen from the widows of many Interlaken hotels.
One attraction in Interlaken is the Hoehematte, a central promenade with a view of Jungfrau Mountain. Other attractions are the Japanese Garden, and the Jungfrau Region Museum of Tourism.
