Luzern, or "Lucerne" in English, is a medium-sized town of 60,000 located in the Lucerne canton of Switzerland. It is the biggest concentrated population center in mostly rural Central Switzerland, that green, grassy region in the foothills of the Alps. Luzern stands facing Lake Lucerne, with the famous peaks of the Alps visible just across the lake. The city was founded by Germanic farmers shortly after the collapse of Rome. Luzern became one of the most important important members of the old Swiss Confederacy, and was one of the few Swiss towns that remained staunchly Catholic during the Protestant Reformation. The city also remained mostly agricultural well into the 19th century. The city's appearance, even today reflects a certain emphasis on the medieval attributes of life.
The most important sights in Luzern are the Chapel Bridge, a 14th century bridge of wood, as well as the Mill Bridge, a covered bridge whose roof and walls are covered with the dramatic paintings of 17th century artist Kaspar Meglinger. Another important sight is the Church of St. Leodegar, patron saint of Luzern. Use EasyToBook.com to find the best hotels in Luzern.
