La Chaux de Fonds is a city in francophone Switzerland, situated in the canton of Neuchâtel near the French border. As of 2007, it boasts 37,023 inhabitants. Archaeologists' evidence shows that people have been living in this part of the Jura mountains for at least 10,000 years. However, the city rose to prominence in the Middle Ages, when it became an agricultural and trade center, processing the many goods that passed between the Neuchâtel and Franche-Comté regions. During the 18th century, the city acquired its greatest fame, when numerous watchmakers set up production there.
The biggest attraction at La Chaux de Fonds is its International Watchmaking Museum. Two of the city's other public museums constitute major attractions as well: the Fine Arts Museum, and the Musee Paysan et Artisanal (Museum of Peasants and Craftsmen).
