Oberhalbstein Valley, or Surses Valley, is at the bottom of the Oberhalbstein Mountain Range. The area was once a major route the Romans followed through the area. See the Julier Pillars that mark out the entrance of the Julier Pass. You can remain in the region for a weekend. Oberhalbstein Valley has several churches and ruins of interest. Check the late Gothic carved altar in the 17th century Parish church in Tinizong or visit the three 17 century churches in Savognin. St. Martin’s has one of the nicest examples of a Baroque ceiling. You can also visit Bivio, where four different languages, including Italian and German, share the town and the regional museum, housed in an old farmhouse from the 16th century.
