The city of Solothurn is the capital of the Swiss canton of Solothurn. It is a beautiful Baroque city, on the banks of the Aare River, and dates back to before Roman times. This is a wonderful place to spend a vacation or even just a weekend. Solothurn is rich in history and culture, and is one of Switzerland’s leading watch-making centres. The 17th century, Baroque Jesuitenkirche is another fascinating church to visit. The Riedholzschance is the remainder of 17th century fortifications that once protected the town. Remains of Roman defensive walls can also bee seen. A clock tower called the Zytlogge is Solothurn’s oldest surviving structure. The bottom part dates to the 12th century. The Kunstmuseum (Art Gallery) contains several Old Masters. Boat tours on the Aare River are available.
