Altstätten is a town situated along Switzerland's Austrian border, in the Rhine Valley. The town's fame extends beyond the borders of its canton of St. Gall, due to its lavish celebration of Carnival. Carnival, or Shrove Tuesday, is a Catholic holiday that takes place in February, before the beginning of Lent.
