Rapperswil is part of Rapperswil-Jona, a town of about 24,400 situated along Lake Zurich in the Swiss canton of St. Galen. The same town is sometimes known by the shorthand appellation of Rappi. The combination of Rapperswil and Jona into one town took place in 2003. Rapperswil is the older component of town, and the Rapperswil city center is a showcase for fascinating medieval buildings. Rapperswil is, morever, famous for its rose garden. Three specially-designed public gardens in Rapperswil contain more than 600 species of rose, earning Rapperswil the additional nickname of Rosenstadt, or "town of roses."
The sight that dominates Rapperswil is Rapperswil Castle, a military defensive structure from at least the 13th century. Another point of interest are the medieval-style wooden bridge over part of Lake Zurich (reconstructed in 2001, after the original bridge was destroyed to make way for a dam called the Seedamm). Wurmsbach Abbey, housing Cistercian nuns, is another point of interest. Use EasyToBook.com to find hotels in Rapperswil close to these sights.
