St. Gallen Hotels and Accommodation

The city of St. Gallen is the capital of the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It dates back to the 7th century when it began as a religious hermitage. A monastery was built in the 8th century, and that establishment’s library, the Stiftsbibliothek, is still intact even though the monastery itself was destroyed in the Reformation. The library, with over 150,000 books and manuscripts, is one of Switzerland’s treasures. This is a wonderful city in which to spend a vacation or even just a weekend. St. Gallen has an intriguing Old Town with many historic buildings. A 16th century esplanade called the Bohl is an administrative centre, and is also used for concerts and exhibits. Among the city’s many fine museums and art galleries are the Historisches Museum and the Natur – und Kunstmuseum (Nature and Art Museum). The 18th century Kathedral is quite imposing, and well worth a visit. Guests staying in St. Gallen hotels will also want to take the funicular called the Muhleggbahn up the hillside for a picnic.
