Lugano is on the north shore of Lake Lugano, and is the largest city in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It is one of Switzerland’s great lakeside resorts. If you come here for a vacation, or even just a weekend, Lugano will charm you with its Old World style and colorful history. A good place to start is the Centro Storico (Old Town), which has a definite Italian character. Here you can see an 18th century palace called the Palazzo Riva, the 17th century Villa Ciani which houses the Museo Civico di Belle Arti, and the Cattedrale San Lorenzo with its Renaisance façade. You will also want to take a walk around the Piazza della Riforma with all its sidewalk cafes. Santa Maria degli Angioli, a 15th century church, is also worth seeing for its Renaissance frescoes.
