Avenches is a community in the canton of Vaud in western Switzerland. It is about ten kilometers northwest of Payerne. In ancient times Avenches was the capital city of the Helveti, the Celtic tribe that ruled the region. After the conquests of Julius Caesar, the town became the Roman provincial capital of Aventicum. The old town was destroyed by invading Alemani (German) warriors during the fall of Rome. Visitors come to budget hotels in Avenches to see the excavations of ancient Roman ruins. Among the best features are the amphitheatre, which seats 6,000 people, parts of the city walls, the baths, and the forum. In the town’s medieval square there is a Roman Museum. It is filled with statuary, mosaics and other artifacts of Roman life. You can even learn what it cost to buy a glass of wine. Don’t miss the replica of the gold bust of the emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Today it is music that draws visitors to discount hotels in Avenches. They come for the prestigious Opera Festival held every July. This event features world-class artists. The old amphitheatre is the main stage. Book well in advance, because this show sells out quickly. In August people come for the Rock Oz’Arenes Festival, which has had headliners such as P.J. Harvey, the Wailers, and the Asian Dub Foundation. In September there is a musical parade with military bands.
