Vevey Hotels and Accommodation
The canton of Vaud is found on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. Vevey is a town within the canton that was known in Roman times by the Latin Vibiscum. Actually, the town was first mentioned in written history by Ptolemy, an ancient Greek philosopher. The name he used for the town was Ouikos. Today, the town is the capital of its district, and is part of the area of Switzerland that is French speaking.
The main square in town is the Grande Place. There is an 1803 granary sitting on the plaza called La Grenette. Also on the square is the La Clef restaurant, famous for the table where Jean-Jacques Rousseau frequently ate. The historically important St. Martin’s Church contains the remains of a number of people who King Charles I put to death. If you are visiting at the right time of the century, be sure to attend the Confrerie des Vignerons, or Brotherhood of Winegrowers’ Festival. Over 16,000 people will attend the festival, which is only held once in a generation. Ask your EasyToBook.com discount hotel owners to get the information for you, but if the trend continues, the next festival will be held in 2021.
