Chungli, also written as Jhongli, is a Taiwanese city best known for its political role in Taiwans movement towards democracy during the 1970's. In 1977, the city was the site of the Chung-li Incident, a riot in which residents protested against unfair elections that encouraged the selection of one party's candidate over his or her rivals. These days, the city has become a culturally vibrant and politically aware civic nexus. The presence of lots of universities (and university students), give the place its exciting and charged atmosphere. Hotels in Chungli put visitors at the center of all the action.
Local points of interest include Ching Yun University, which is one of the top post-secondary educational institutions in Taiwan, as well as the Taiwan Lutheran Chung-li Truth Church. Cultural sites of note include the Dasi Convention Hall at Jhongjheng Park, with its traditional Chinese architecture, as well as the Chinese Furniture Museum in nearby Taoyuan City.
