Kanchanaburri is a town in the province of Kanchanaburri, and has a population of around 31,500 inhabitants. It is located where the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers both flow into the Mae Klong river. This is where the notorious bridge over the River Kwai was built by prisoners of war under the rule of the Japanese in 1942. The town also houses a memorial and two museums; the Thailand-Burma Railway museum and the Death War Memorial museum, which are dedicated to the Bridge and the Death railway.

This is a good spot for travellers, not just because of the cheap shopping, but because of both its centuries old history, and its memorials to some of the terrible happenings of the Second World War. Worth seeing are the series of Buddhist grotto shrines, just 5 km south east of the city.
