What you need to know before traveling to Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is one of the most mountainous and isolated provinces of Thailand. It is both the most northern and the furthest west, and less popular with tourists than the nearby Chiang Mai province although purists and those seeking a glimpse of a “simpler existence” journey there. Those who do visit Mae Hong Son are generally after natural sights. While there are many temples in the area, they are not the main attraction. Rather, visitors seek out photographic opportunities with members of the various hill tribes, or follow the elephant training camps. The area is frequently covered with mist, giving sunrises and sunsets over the mountains and forests an ideal postcard-like cast each day. Nightlife is relatively non-existent, although the food is quite good. The comparatively underdeveloped nature of the region means that the chance to see forests, rivers, and the “wilds” of Thailand is constantly present, and this appeals to both urbanites and hippies alike.
