Big Buddha Temple or Wat Phra Yai, is a temple that has a modern construction situated in Koh Samui's northern coast. Compared to other well known temple, Wat Phra Yai is considered simple and lacks the elegance of a typical temple found among Koh Samui attractions. However, the 12 meter tall golden statue of Buddha that was built in 1972 can be seen from afar when approaching the island. It sits on a platform at the top of a dragon designed stair case. The platform can give a good view of the beaches nearby. At the foot the statue is a meditation center for any devout Buddhist.
In front of the temple, you will find a number of shops and stalls that cater to lots of people everyday. This one of a kind Koh Samui attraction is popular among foreigners and even with the locals. They light up candles or burn incense or bring some offering like fruits and flowers, guaranteeing a successful visit.
