Situated in the north of Thailand, Udon has a wealth of attractions for the visitor and serves as a gateway to nearby Laos. The bronze age excavations east of Udorn at Ban Chiang are a common venue for day trips, while within the town itself the Udon Sunshine Orchid Farm is always worth a look, famous as it is for a variety of orchids, orchid-derived perfumes, and plants that "dance to music". Just 15 kilometres north of Udon is the village of Ban Nakha, renowned for producing home woven silk and cotton garments – visitors to this part of Thailand have been known to pick up some exquisite products at bargain prices. If you want to take time out, do as the locals do and head to Nong Prajack Park, a prime area for exercising and relaxing. The park has a large lake with several picture-perfect islands and is a great place to spot Thais at rest.
