The Hammamet medina is a bit of history all on its own, and an excellent place to go shopping if you wish to buy local crafts. The Hammamet medina is located in Hammamet, Tunisia and dates back to circa 1500. This is when the Hafsids built the walls you will see when you explore this attraction. They put the walls up to permit safe living and trading. At one time this site was a Aghlabid stronghold. Be prepared as the medina is a maze of narrow (some covered) lanes.
You'll delight in the condition of this medina, or marketplace, but be aware that many of the stalls you see are souvenir stalls. So you will need to search for what is authentic. The medina's major focus years ago was on fishing, and today you can still see this activity and enjoy a local catch at a restaurant later in the day. If local color is what you are searching for, the Hammamet Medina is the best place for pictures. Remember to take your "haggling spirit" with you when you search for bargains.
