Sousse, located in Tunisia is famous for more than just their superb beaches. They are also noted for having a veritable embarrassment of riches in the archeological treasures department. On display at the Sousse Museum you will find antiquities from Islam, Punic and Roman times. This museum is second only to the Bardo National Museum in Tunis for its exhibits. Interesting note: Sousse has over 5 kms of catacombs complete with funeral galleries and marble tombs. One of them is open for viewing – the Bon Pasteur section. The rest are undergoing restoration.
The Sousse Museum is not hard to find. It's located in the Khalef al Fata Tower in the Kasbah. The Tower itself is well worth viewing too as it is from the 9th century, and in remarkable condition. When you go into the Tower be prepared for the Head of Medusa. It will make you stop right in your tracks. You will also see the Phoenician sea god Hadad. Hadad is the patron saint of Mediterranean sailors. Take in the superb mosaics from Christian catacombs and Roman country houses. Get a good look at the Punic steles dedicated to Tanit.
