On the Cukurova Plain, in the most fertile area of Turkey, the city of Adana sits along the Seyhan river. According to mythology, the city was founded by Adanus, who was the supposed brother of Zeus and son of Cronus. But history does show that it has been the location for civilizations as far back as the Hittites. One stunning remnant of these past civilizations is the Taskopru, or stone bridge that spans the river. It was built the emperor Hadrian, and is about 300 yards long.
Inside the city, there are a number of historic mosques. The Great Mosque Ulu Camii was built in the 16th century, and others include the Yag and Hasan Aga Mosques. The Saat Kulesi is the clock tower in the town, and was built in 1882. The Bedesten is a covered bazaar worth a look. The Ethnographical Museum was once a church that was built by crusaders, but today exhibits Turkish cultural artifacts. Or, visit the Adana Archaeological Museum to see the ruins unearthed in the area.
