Afyon, Turkey is a province. The largest city within it is Afyonkarahisar. The city, also known by its English name as the Black Fortress of Opium, is named by the old fortress located at the heart of the city. Visitors will find the Ottoman houses throughout the region a testament to the areas cultural heritage. The Great Mosque, Soup Kitchen Mosque and Dervish Hall Mosquer are larger buildings with beautiful architecture. Visitors often stop in Afyon while traveling to the cities of Izmir or Ankara. Even Istanbul and Konya are reachable by rail or bus service. While there, stop by the battlefield where the Battle of Dumlupinar was fought which ended the country's War of Independence.
