Visitors to Turkey who are lovers of ancient Hellenic architecture will not want to miss Didim. The city’s name comes from the word Didyma, or twins, and mythology suggests that it was where Apollo and Artemis (the twins of Zeus and Leto) were born. Today, the modern city of Didim surrounds the ancient portions, some of which date back to the 8th century, B.C. Nearby are a series of other ancient cities, including Miletos, Ephesus and Bodrum, which makes Didim a good place to select a budget hotel. In Didim, there are two incredible temples. The Appolon Temple is a masterpiece of Hellenic architecture – one of the largest known. The Artemis Temple once had over 124 columns, some of which are still standing, although much of the stone has been pillaged over the years and used for other structures. In ancient times, Didim was on the coast, and the Sacret Road once connected it to the harbor. You can still see the stoned road outside of Didim.
