Izmir is a city that has come a long way. Once known as the “smelly waterfront”, it is today called the “beautiful waterfront” after a multi-million dollar renovation. It’s a lovely place to visit, whether you've got a week or just a weekend. Izmir is home to many museums and waterfront activities. Be certain to visit the Asansör region of town. A 19th century passenger elevator was installed to provide access to the upper levels of this hilly neighborhood. The view from the top is gorgeous and there are some great restaurants where you can enjoy the view and a drink. The Archaeology Museum here is also worth a visit because of its impressive collection of ancient Roman artifacts. Walk along Konak Pier as you take in the lovely waterfront. There are lovely shops here housed in the old Customs House, designed by Gustav Eiffel.
