Datca is the name of both a town and a district in the province of Mugla in Turkey. The town is located on the long, narrow Datca Peninsula, which runs between the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. The land is mountainous and heavily forested. This region is called the Turkish Riviera and the Turquoise Coast, so the discount hotels in Datca are very popular with tourists. The beautiful climate, warm sea and lovely beaches have made the town an important vacation destination. Datca is one of the embarkation ports for the famous Blue Cruise boat tours that take passengers on both long and short trips throughout the many coves and bays.
The Datca region is also rich in history. Marc Antony gave Queen Cleopatra of Egypt this territory as part of his wedding gift to her. Guests staying in budget hotels in Datca can see the ruins of the ancient city of Knidos at the tip of the peninsula. It was here that the 4th century BC statue of Aphrodite (Venus) by the Greek sculptor Praxiteles was found. Visitors can also see the 2300 year old marble sun dial of the Mathematician Eudoxes of Cnidus. You can tour olive, fig, lemon and orange orchards, and see an olive press in a restored mill. There is fishing and wild boar hunting here. The seafood is excellent, and in season you can try “cagla”, a delicacy made from fresh almonds.
