Known as the ‘city of prophets’, Sanliurfa is situated in the south east of the Anatolia region of Turkey. One of the great charms of the city is its old bazaars where, to this day, you can still see peasants from the countryside haggling over the wares. The shops inside the Kazzaz Bazaar, built in 1562, stand only one meter high and sell the dresses worn by the local men and women. For carpets and rugs, the Sipahi Bazaar is the place to go, and for copperware, the Huseyniye Bazaar. Not all of the shops in the city are as traditional as these old markets however, and in the newer part of the town visitors can expect to find a modern shopping centre and office buildings.
With a population now exceeding 1.5 million, the city has developed hugely in terms of tourism in recent years, and visitors will find a variety of hotels offering accommodation to suit every budget. A range of cheap hotels in Sanliurfa can be booked quickly and easily through EasyToBook.com. The centre of the city is an ideal place from which to start exploring, and Sanliurfa and its surrounding area have much to offer. Balikli Lake and its environs, the focal point of tourism in the city and closed to traffic, has been planted to create an oasis in the centre of this huge city. The Sanliurfa Fortress on the northern slope of the Damlacik Mountain just south of the city has no less than 25 watchtowers, and the area of the Tek Tek Mountains, situated about 45kms eastwards, has been designated as a national park and has several caves and ancient sites to visit.
