The Zoological Gardens in Kyiv began in 1908. It was founded by the Nature Lovers Society and financed by private donations. The first year the zoo was open the animals were kept in the food storage area of the main Kiev railway station because there was not suitable shelter at the zoo. Four years later the animals were moved to their permanent area in the outskirts of Kiev and in 1913 the animals had a heated place to stay. The political instability that began in 1914 held the zoo up until after the Russian Revolution ended. In 1940 the zoo was being used by the German garrison. They evacuated the animals, which were returned when the war ended.

The bids pavilion was added in 1970 and is currently the largest one in Europe. In 1982 Animals Island was presented to house the larger animals such as lions and tigers.. It is separated from the zoo’s visitors by small canals. By 1996 the zoo was admitted to the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo not only showcases the animals but is a research center focusing on acclimatization of far land animals and aiding in the preservation of rare animals.
