Next time you are visiting the Ukraine and you are enjoying the sights make your way to the city of Kiev. There is a monument that overlooks the Dnipro river known as the Rodina Mat or Mother Motherland. This monument is set on top of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War also known as World War 2. The statue, which dominates the Kiev skyline, is three hundred and two feet tall.

The statue which was built by Yevgeny Vuchetich was dedicated in 1967. At that time it was the tallest sculpture in the world. The statue was modeled after a city native, Valentina Izotova and commemorates the battle of Stalingrad. Although it is no longer possible to go inside of the statue it does remain lit at night. The Rodina Mat or Mother Motherland is a must see sculpture for tourists and natives alike. While visiting the sculpture don’t forget to go into the museum below.
