One of the most valuable and famous tenement house’s in Lviv is “The Black House.” The house was built for Italian tax collector Tomas Alberi at the end of the sixteenth century. The house, which became a historic museum in 1926, is one of the most beautiful example’s of renaissance architecture in Lviv.The front elevation of the house was created from sandstone. The sandstone has darkened through the centuries. The present rhombuslike shape of “The Black House” dates from 1675.

“The Black House” is located near the 14th century Ploshcha Rynok Market Square in the Old Town section of Lviv. The Old Town is the historic center of Lviv as well as the place where locals and tourists meet. “The Black House” is a major tourist attraction. The Ploshcha Rynok Market Square has remained unchanged over the years in part due to its architectural beauty allowing visitors to see “The Black House” in the same setting it was built in.
