In 1895 it was announced that there was a necessity for a large city theater building to be constructed in Lviv. Z. Gorgilevsky, a Berlin Building Academy graduate and the Director of Lviv higher art-industrial school was elected to oversee the project. For the site he chose the center of the city which was already densely built-up. The architect proposed to enclose the Poltva river underground and to use a whole concrete base as the foundation. The work on the foundation was started in 1897. This was the first foundation of this type in Europe. The construction took three years. The building was constructed using classical forms and details of the Renaissance as well as baroque architecture.

In 1934 the theater was closed for financial reasons. In 1934 it was renamed the Lviv Theater of Opera and Ballet and reopened. It was closed again in the late 1970’s for restructuring. During this time the foundation was strengthened, the basement was re-planned and scenic mechanisms were reconstructed. In 1984, the Lviv Theater of Opera and Ballet was again opened.
