The original gothic cathedral took one hundred thirty-three years to complete from the date the first stone was laid by Polish King Kazimierz the Great in 1360. Over the years the Latin Cathedral has been rebuilt, reconstructed and refurbished. As each renovation took place the cathedral absorbed different architectural styles and elements. The result of this has been a building that represents a six hundred fifty year collage of styles.

The interior of the Latin Cathedral has sculptures and carvings of the renaissance chapels. There are baroque ceiling frescos from the eighteenth century, stained glass windows from the end of the nineteenth century and the famous wonderworking icon of the Virgin Mary the Gentle also known as the Lviv star. The statue is located in the central alter of the church. In addition to the main cathedral there are several chapels that are adjacent to the cathedral. Certain prominent Lvivites also have memorial plaques at the cathedral.
