The main sanctuary of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, St. George Cathedral, is situated high on top of St. George Hill. The first church was built on this hill in 1280. It was a wooden church which was destroyed in 1340 by King Casimir III of Poland. A four-column Byzantine basilica was constructed in place of the original church. The churches that have stood on St. George Mountain have been destroyed many times over the years by invaders, but they have always been re-built. In the 18th century St. George Cathedral, as it is now seen was built.

The most precious relic of the church is the icon of the Virgin Mary which was brought to Lviv in 1674 by Bishop Joseph. The interior of the church is in the rococo style. The last restoration took place in 1996 on the 400th anniversary of the signing of the Beresteia’s Union. The architecture of church shows both traditional western influence as well as the style of more traditional Ukrainian church buildings.
