The Ivan Franko National University of Iviv is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. It was originally founded in 1661. The university contained four departments. They were theology, philosophy, law and medical. The building the Ivan Franko National University of Iviv is currently house in was built by Julius Hochberg. It was built between 1877 and 1881. The statue of Ivan Franko, who was a student, was founded in 1967. Ivan Franko was a well known Ukrainian scholar, public figure, writer and translator.

By the early 1920’s the Ivan Franko National University of Iviv had gone from four departments to fifty five departments, however it was not until 1933 when language and literature became a department at the university. Today there are over one hundred departments at the university complete with laboratories and working units. The postgraduate courses offer eighty-nine specialties. They have also been expanding their connections to higher education schools in Hungary, Germany, the USA, Canada, France and numerous other countries.
