The UAE has been affected by the discovery of oil in the country. But the lavish environment that exists in Dubai today is not the way that the city and surrounding areas looked and operated before becoming incredibly wealthy. Although it’s hard to imagine when you look at the city today, a much more modest Dubai once existed. Luckily, you can still get a glimpse into the Dubai of old through the Traditional Architectural Museum.
The museum is housed within the Al Fahidi Fort, build around 1787 in order to protect Dubai from outside invaders. In 1971 the fort was revamped in order to become a museum. The displays include a number of life-sized dioramas of what life was like in Dubai. The displays feature traditional houses, farms, markets, and other aspects of life at the time. There are also artifacts from around the country that date back as far as 3,000 B.C.
