Ras al-Khaimah is the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates. The name, appropriately, means “the top of the tent”. Any lover of history staying in a comfortable discount hotel in Ras al-Khaimah will be interested to know that this emirate has been settled for over 5,000 years. One of the oldest towns is Julfar, just to the north of the city of Ras al-Khaimah. A stream that flows through Ras al-Khaimah divides the city into two parts; Old Ras al-Khaimah and Al Nakheel.
Many people come to this emirate for the spectacular scenery. At Al Door you can see archaeological excavations, but there is also a perfect view of the tiny islands and lagoons of the Khor al-Beidah. This spot is popular with picnickers and bird watchers. The Ras al-Khaimah Museum is housed in an old 18th century fort which was destroyed by the British in 1819, and restored in the 1980s. It displays artifacts from the emirate’s archaeology and history, as well as a collection of sea shells and Arab jewellery. One room is dedicated to the ruling family, the Al Qasimi. Behind the fort is the Old Town, in which you can get a taste of the city’s past. For visitors staying in budget hotels in Ras al-Khaimah who enjoy a day of shopping, Al Nakheel is the place to go. It is the modern part of the city, and has good shopping facilities and a large number of restaurants.
