Fraser Castle is arguably the most elaborate Z-plan castle in the whole of Scotland. Fraser was built between the years 1575 and 1636 and is one of the best and grandest examples of the Castles of the Mar. The castle was built by Michael Fraser who was the 6th laird through the collaborative effort of two great families of master masons, Bell and Leiper. Two other castles in the area are also built in very similar style, Crathes and Craigievar.

One of the finest rooms in the castle is the great hall which is striking in its simplicity. The castles’ interior walls are covered with portraits of the members of the Fraser family including one of Raeburn. Also it is worth taking a closer look at the often overlooked carpets, curtains and bed hangings which are scattered throughout the castle. The castle grounds contain a walled garden with many beautiful flowers.
