Burn O’Vat is located on low-lying ground in the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve. The reserve consists of a large and extensive Birchwood forest, also taking in a wetlands and heather moor area. The reserve has two large lochs or lakes in the middle called Davan and Kinord. Both these lochs provide a winter shelter for thousands of geese each year.

In the west of the reserve you can find hidden away the Vat. The Vat is an amazing geological feature which shoot to prominence in the 18th century for secretly concealing the Scottish outlaw, Gilderoy Macgregor. If you enjoy walking then the reserve is a must see as it has many wonderful walkways passing through it. Other interesting features include an abandoned settlement as well as an ancient Celtic cross. If you do visit it is worth taking a look in the excellent visitor centre at the reserve.
