Huntly Castle is a wonderful example of a ruined 12th century castle. Over hundreds of years different sections of the castle were erected including a motte used as an early fortification for attackers. A palace was erected on the site between the 16th and 17th century by the Gordon family. The castle is a must see if you are in the north east of Scotland and is easily accessible from Aberdeen city.
The architectural detail used to create the castle are breathtaking and the property itself is beautifully set in the surrounding countryside. If you do go and visit you will get to experience the famous heraldic sculpture as well as the inscribed stone friezes. The castle is accessible through a flight a stairs however it can equally be enjoyed form the outside. If you are using a wheelchair than you can easily enter through the sales point on the castle grounds.
