Dunollie Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Oban. It is the seat of the clan MacDougall and it originally dates back to the 7th century even though its current ruins date back to the 15th century. It is quite accessible as it sits high above the road to Ganavan, just by the north end of Oban. This castle commands the view of the town of Oban, harbor and the outlying isles. Its ruins are accessible through a short and steep pathway.

In the days of the kingdom of Dalriada, back in the 7th century, there was a fortification of the high promontory. But the castle was probably built in the 13th century, by the third chief of the MacDougalls, Ewan MacDougall. These were the descendants of the Lord of the Isles, Somerled. The land was late lost to the Marquis of Argyl in the 17th century but later returned to the Macdougalls again.
