Cambridge is full of beautifully picturesque and romantic spots for the visitor to the area who is looking for something to do that is both historically interesting and offers a glimpse of the region’s famous natural beauty. Combining the awesome architectural prowess of the early days of Cambridge University with the magnificence of the river that flows through its ground, the Bridge of Sighs is one such spot, and one of the most famous.

Despite its melancholy name, there is little to sigh about when visiting the Bridge of Sighs. Though it shares a name with its famous Italian counterpart, the two bridges have very little in common, and the only practical function it serves is to join the two halves of St. John’s College. The allure of this area is not in its practicality, however, but rather in the beautiful view that it affords. It was said to one of Queen Victoria’s favorite spots, where she would stand for hours, watching boats travel by underneath the bridge.
